Inspiration Thursday #20
Come one, come all! It’s time for the return of “Inspiration Thursday’. First up is a fantastic piece for British Airways. It does a wonderful job of playing up the nostalgia and historical aspects of aviation. The musical score also works beautifully. It was created by Academy Films in London. Next up is a demo reel from my good friend Steven Lester. Steven is apart of the...

What I learned from Phil Vischer
I recently had some time to read “Me, Myself & Bob” by Phil Vischer.  If you don’t know who Phil is, he’s the creator of the popular children’s video series ‘VeggieTales’.  If you grew up in any sort of churched background, chances are you probably have a seen a couple of his creations from time to time. And if you didn’t grow up in a churched...

What's new...
I realize it’s been months since I’ve written anything on here. Now that we’ve recognized that, let’s move on. The last couple of months our team has been working on a large project for our Christmas services we just had a little over a week ago. We traveled to New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas in support of the message for Christmas.  Our pastor, Perry, taught the first...

When great isn't good enough
A lot of writing I do on here comes out of personal experience. Sometimes my thoughts come from reflections on hard lessons I’ve had to learn through major failures. I do not work for myself, which is something I think can be said of a lot of us. Recently I was asked to create something very specific. I wrestled with it for a few days. Came up with a game plan and carried it to completion....

Inspiration Thursday #18
Here’s some of the weekly finds from around the internets worth checking out.  The first one is from a group of friends who traveled all over the world making 3 short concept films.  This one is based on the idea of movement.  You can read more about them and check out a couple more of their films here. This next piece is from a good friend of mine, John Carrington, who recently took a...

Inspiration Thursday #17
Here’s some of the most fantastic pieces that I’ve come across this week while digging around in hard to reach places. The first is a mind-blowing piece from the motion graphics team at Elevation Church. It was directed by Geoff Schultz. The next two pieces were created in-house here at NewSpring by Michael Jones and Darrin Dick for our summer camp for our Fuse* Student Ministry...

A Story | Marked by Love
Our new series called  ”Stories” kicked off this past weekend at NewSpring. For the better part of the last 7 weeks I have been leading the effort on telling several stories of peoples lives in our church.  It’s been one of the most challenging and rewarding time periods that I can remember. We debuted 3 this past weekend and have 3 more slated for this upcoming weekend.  The...

Inspiration #15
It was a long holiday weekend.  Sometimes we all need a good kick in the tail to get our engines running again.  Here’s a few pieces I’ve really enjoyed watching lately and are pushing me to become better at what I do. The first is ‘Open. Your. Eyes’ by Camille Marotte. The second is a teaser for the new M83 album ‘Echos.’  Created by Greg Hunt. Next is a...

Still Frame: Israel
I wrote in the last post, I’ve been pretty busy the last few months with various things. One of the those things was a trip I took to Israel.  Starting next year NewSpring Church is going to be leading trips to Israel. So this trip I was apart of was an initial scout trip of sorts. I went to shoot some promotional materials that we’re going to begin rolling out in the coming weeks....

Still Frame: Fuse Acoustic Sessions
Hey there. Been awhile since I utilized this blog for some projects I’ve been working on. Lots has been going on in my world over the last several months, but it’s time to share what’s been going on. Yesterday a few of us went up to Greenville to record some acoustic performances of some new tracks our FUSE* Band was laying down.  The music was incredible and I’m really...

Symmetry and Flight
Can’t say enough about the work from the guys at Everynone. They have a way have creating something so unique and fresh every time they put new work out. Furthermore this video shot on a GoPro HD camera is by far the most inspirational piece I’ve I ever seen made about people jumping out of planes. It was created by Betty Wants In, a design shop from Melbourne, Australia.

A Story | Big Picture Faith
So, this past weekend we had the chance to debut not one but two new stories.  The process on not only telling Mandy’s story but also this one began about five weeks ago.  Crafting this particular story was a bit tricky.  It’s longer than we normally like to let our typical stories run, nearly ten minutes, but there was just no way to tell it in a ‘normal’ form factor....

A Story | Tears of Hope
Just about a year ago I had the opportunity to tell Zac’s Story.  To say any of us knew the type of impact his story would have on people’s lives would be an absolute lie.  While Zac is now with Jesus, his family is still here.  And their story has continued to grow and evolve.  It has been an absolute honor to still be apart of telling the Smith family story.   A few technical...

Real Life Snow Globe
This is a fantastic and magical use of the tilt-shift technique.  It captures a day in the life of a miniature Whistler, the biggest little ski area in the world.  The video gives us a birds eye very of a tiny Whistler Village and the surrounding area…essentially making a real life snow globe.  It’s produced by Switchback Entertainment.  All the tilt shift effects were done in post on...

Minimalist Movie Posters
I find the minimalist art movement both intriguing and fascinating.  I think it’s incredible in most cases you can define something/someone by a few shapes.  And it’s with that I present to you the minimalist stylings of Pedro Vidotto.  Specifically his genius take on a few well known pieces of Hollywood film artwork.

Hope.
The Christmas services this year at NewSpring were off the chart. We got a front row seat to see God show up and move in a huge way.  Here’s a glimpse at what that looked like.

Visual Elements: The Christmas Offering
Towards the end of last week I was asked to create a few elements to support a message that our pastor was teaching on giving.  They included images of NewSpring’s History, some scripture, and some visual support for a illustration he was giving.  Here is an example of a couple of them and how they were used in the service.

Style Frames: Hope Opener
Here are a few style frames from the opener for our upcoming series ‘Hope.’  I wasn’t involved with the idea/shooting/or rigging of this concept, but I did take a crack at doing some coloring and compositing.  This isn’t 100% final the look we’re going with and there are still some touch-ups that need to be finished, but I’m excited to where it leads.

Series Promo: Hope
Towards the end of last week I put together a quick promo for our new series beginning in two weeks called ‘Hope’.  It’s the Christmas season so I had no problem breaking out the red and white color scheme.  Combine that with a dash of snow and you have an unashamedly holiday branded piece.

Recently some guys from our Fuse* Student Ministry headed up to the Empire State to shoot some short videos for their current series Commissioned.  It was cold, rainy, and cloudy.  But the even lighting from the clouds made for some fantastic lighting for the footage they were shooting.  I asked if I could take a crack at coloring it, and here are some results.

Breakdown: From the Ashes
Where to begin? Overall, this piece for me was a departure as to how I typically tell stories.  In the past I have typically followed the “confessional style formula.”  Translated, sit the person down in front of the camera, have them look into it and just let them talk.  Certainly there are pro’s to that style, and I’ve used it for quite some time, but there is a degree...

A Story: From the Ashes
The last couple of weeks I’ve have the honor and privilege to tell the story of Jason and Jennifer Hall.  There’s not much I can do to set up this powerful story other than to say take four minutes and let this story wash over you and take a minute to reflect on God’s grace in our lives.
